Last weekend at Animazement in Raleigh, NC, Bill and I had the pleasure of having Robert Woodhead on the show for an incredibly fun and educational interview. For those unaware, Robert is the Founder and CEO of Wilmington, NC’s AnimEigo, one of the oldest anime licensing companies in North America.

In decades past, AnimEigo was responsible for licensing and distributing anime titles such as Bubblegum Crisis, Otaku no Video, Urusei Yatsura, Kimagure Orange Road, Macross, select Lupin the Third titles, and even live-action works such as Lone Wolf and Cub on VHS, LaserDisc, and DVD.

In the 2010s, AnimEigo has continued to stay relevant through numerous, successful crowd-funded anime projects to release HD, prestige versions of titles both in their own back-catalog and license-rescues from other companies.

We sit down and chat with Robert about how the company came to be, what the licensing/distribution process for old anime was like, and how vintage anime has become relevant again in 2019, among other things.
